Just found out the FDA actually approved a cocaine nasal spray - wild right? It's called Numbrino and this small pharmaceutical company called Lannett got approval for it. Apparently it's the first branded drug they've launched in their entire 78-year history, which is kind of a big deal for them.
So here's the thing - cocaine's still Schedule II and illegal recreationally, but doctors have been using it medically forever because it works insanely well as a local anesthetic. The nasal spray specifically gets used for minor surgeries around the nasal cavities. Ear, nose and throat surgeons love it because it numbs tissue AND constricts blood vessels to stop bleeding. Pretty clever actually.
This isn't even the first time the FDA approved something like this - they approved a similar cocaine-based product called Goprelto back in 2017. But Numbrino just went through rigorous testing (phase 3 trials plus phase 1) so it's legit. The spray won't be sold in regular pharmacies though, just to doctors.
Lannett's stock jumped on the news, but honestly the company's been through it - lost like 85% of its value over the past five years. So this approval could be a turning point for them, or just a small win. Either way, pretty interesting how a 78-year-old company finally gets their first branded drug and it happens to be a cocaine nasal spray.
