Been looking at where I could actually afford to live on the East Coast and stumbled on some interesting data. Turns out there are way more cheapest places to live in america than I thought, especially if you're willing to move away from the major metros. Pennsylvania and Georgia are dominating the list with like 11 cities each that have annual costs under $35k. Sharon, PA is literally the most affordable at just under $26k yearly - that's wild compared to what you'd pay in Boston or DC.
The research looked at over 1,000 East Coast cities measuring cost of living, mortgage rates, median household incomes and livability scores. What's interesting is that some of the cheapest places to live in america on this coast actually have decent livability ratings. Like Meadville, PA has a score of 85 even though annual costs are only around $31.6k. Erie and Huntington, West Virginia are also scoring high for quality of life.
If you're seriously considering a move, places like Johnstown, PA (around $29.5k annually) or Jamestown, NY ($29.8k) seem to offer that sweet spot of affordability plus decent median household incomes. Even some of the Georgia cities like Americus and Cordele are under $30k yearly. The biggest surprise was seeing some of the cheapest places to live in america still have median mortgages under $800 a month - that's probably why people are actually considering these towns as retirement or relocation options.
Obviously livability varies a lot by city, but if cost of living is your main concern for relocating east, you've got solid options. The data suggests Pennsylvania and Georgia cities are where you'll find the real deals right now.
