I just came across some interesting statistics. Satoshi Nakamoto's holdings, the creator of Bitcoin, theoretically exceeded $130 billion dollars. At the current BTC price of around $77.5k, that sounds impressive.
But here’s the thing — none of Satoshi’s original bitcoins have ever been spent or sold. That’s about 1 million BTC that have just been sitting in addresses since the network’s inception. No one knows where the keys are, whether Satoshi is still alive, or if these are simply lost coins.
It results in a funny situation: Satoshi Nakamoto’s paper wealth is enormous, but completely immovable. It’s like having a billion-dollar apartment but losing the keys and being unable to sell it.
It’s especially interesting to look at this in the context of how Bitcoin has developed. The creator disappeared, leaving behind code and unused coins. Maybe it was meant as a kind of symbol — that the true value of Bitcoin isn’t in its creator, but in the system itself.
Still, it’s amusing to think that Satoshi Nakamoto’s holdings continue to grow along with the price of Bitcoin, even though he’ll never know about it himself.
