CryptoWorld News reports that Elon Musk sued OpenAI, and the case officially opened at the Federal Court in Oakland, California, on April 27 local time. Jury selection took place that day, and opening statements are expected to begin on Tuesday. On the day of jury selection, both sides traded intense blows on social media.

OpenAI’s official account said, “We can’t wait to present our evidence in court—the truth and the law are on our side. This lawsuit has been an unfounded, jealousy-driven attempt to suppress competition.” Musk then hit back, claiming that Altman and Brockman “stole a charity,” and accusing them of promising to keep OpenAI non-profit forever when they founded it in 2015, luring him to invest $38 million, only for OpenAI to later switch to a for-profit structure.

Musk is seeking damages of up to $134 billion and is requesting the removal of Altman and Brockman, as well as the reversal of the conversion to a for-profit setup. The presiding judge is Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers. The liability determination phase is expected to continue until mid-May, and both sides will testify in court.
