Recently, I was reviewing my vehicle registration certificate and realized that many people simply ignore box D.4, where the body type is indicated. There are some cryptic codes like AA, AB, AC — and at first, you don’t understand what they mean.

It turns out that the body types are coded according to the European classification, which is also used in Ukraine when maintaining the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) register. This isn’t just for show — these designations help clearly identify your vehicle’s construction and purpose.

For example, AA — is a sedan, a classic closed body style. AB — is a hatchback with a tailgate that lifts along with the glass. AC — is a station wagon with an extended roof and a large trunk. AD — is a coupe, a sporty two-seater vehicle. AE — is a convertible with an open top. There’s also BB — a van where the cab is combined with the body, and SE — a living trailer.

Why is this important? The body type affects functionality, capacity, and comfort. When registering a vehicle or making changes to documents, these codes must be accurate. If you make a mistake, you’ll spend a long time sorting it out with service center administrators.

If you’re buying a used car or re-registering it, be sure to check box D.4 in the certificate. Body types are not just bureaucratic details — they are real characteristics that influence value, insurance, and maintenance. In case of any doubts, it’s best to contact the nearest MIA service center — specialists will help correctly interpret all entries and update the necessary data in the register.
