What are the main US stock exchanges? Features explained
The biggest difference between US stocks and Taiwanese stocks is that — Taiwan has only one exchange, but the US has three major exchanges operating independently. While their trading hours are synchronized, the listed stocks, trading methods, and market characteristics vary.
New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)
As the world's largest stock exchange (by total market value of listed stocks), NYSE lists over 3,500 stocks, mainly traditional large-cap blue-chip companies. Although electronic, floor trading still plays an important role, especially for large institutional trades in pricing and execution.
NASDAQ Stock Market
NASDAQ is the world's first electronic stock exchange, operating entirely via electronic systems, with investors trading directly via phone or internet. Tech giants like Microsoft, Apple, and others are listed here, making NASDAQ often seen as a tech stock indicator.
American Stock Exchange (AMEX)
The third-largest US trading market, mainly listing small- and mid-cap stocks. Its trading mode is similar to NYSE. Its unique feature is that it is the only exchange offering stocks, futures, and derivatives trading simultaneously. After 2008, it was merged into NYSE American.
Trading rules quick tips
Taiwanese investors in US stocks should remember these basic times and rules, especially time zone adjustments, to seize every trading opportunity.
