Stock Markets Going Dark on Juneteenth: Here's What You Need to Know

Abstract generation in progress

TL;DR: All U.S. stock exchanges (NYSE, Nasdaq, S&P 500, etc.) are closed on June 19 to observe Juneteenth. Trading resumes Friday at 9:30 a.m. ET. Bond markets are also closed.

The Quick History

Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865—the day Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas with the news that slavery had ended. While the Emancipation Proclamation was signed on January 1, 1863, Texas was the last state to actually enforce it. Fast forward to 2021: President Biden signed Juneteenth into federal law, making it an official U.S. holiday.

Why Markets Close

It's straightforward—federal holiday = no trading. This includes:

  • Stock markets: NYSE, Nasdaq, DJIA, S&P 500
  • Bond markets: Also shut down
  • Duration: Full day closure

This year Juneteenth falls on Thursday, so expect a shortened week followed by a regular Friday session.

How to Spend Your Day Off (If You're Into That)

Not just for traders. Here are some legit ways to engage:

  • National Museum of African American History & Culture: Hosting a two-day virtual celebration (June 19-20) with performances, workshops, and an interactive timeline of Juneteenth
  • Step Afrika!: Broadcasting a special performance at 8 p.m. ET featuring stepping—a percussive dance form created by African American college students
  • Outdoor Afro: Community events focused on connecting Black Americans to nature and reflecting on freedom
  • Juneteenth Foundation: Running both in-person and virtual festivals with panel discussions and career fairs

Bottom line: No trading Thursday. Markets back to business Friday. Use the day to learn some history or catch up on life outside the charts.
