New Hampshire Blocks Vote on Crypto Mining — What's at Stake?
New Hampshire was close to approving House Bill 639, which would free crypto miners from local restrictions on energy, noise, and special taxes. It seemed like a sure thing. Then comes the surprise: the Senate Commerce Committee kicked the vote to next week.
What happened?
The committee was unable to vote twice. Result: 4 to 2 for “interim study” — basically, “leave it in the drawer for now”. Senators complained of a tsunami of public feedback since the last discussion. Like, the mining community must have flooded their inbox.
Why does this matter?
The project sought to give real freedom to miners: no locally imposed electricity restrictions, no special taxes on digital assets. If it passes, New Hampshire will become a mining hub ( like El Salvador, but in New England ). If it doesn't pass, the usual bureaucracy continues.
The reality:
Internal disagreements = lack of consensus even among Republicans. Some senators may be concerned about environmental impact or community pressure. This delays, but does not kill the project — it just returns sooner or later, in an adjusted form.
Keep an eye out: if this becomes law, it could trigger a rush of miners to NH. If it dies, the scenario becomes more complicated for the industry in the US.
