With the arrival of Super Central Bank Week, the focus of the global financial market is on the Fed's upcoming interest rate decision. The market widely expects the Fed to implement a 25 basis point rate cut this week, a expectation supported by multiple factors.
Recent economic data shows signs of weakness in the U.S. job market. The September ADP private sector employment decreased by 32,000, marking the largest drop in nearly half a year. Layoff plans announced by several companies further confirm the deteriorating employment environment. At the same time, inflation pressure has eased, with the September core CPI growing 3.0% year-on-year, below market expectations. Excluding the impact of tariffs, the inflation level is close to the Fed's 2% target.
Powell previously defined interest rate cuts as a "risk management measure" aimed at preventing an economic downturn. Neil Dutta, Chief Economist at Renaissance Macro, believes that the risk of another 25 basis point rate cut this week is manageable. The interest rate futures market also reflects strong investor expectations for rate cuts, with predictions of a new round of cuts possibly occurring in December.
However, there are still differences within the Fed regarding the decision to cut interest rates. Some officials express concerns about the persistently high inflation in the service sector and warn of the potential risks of an inflation rebound. These internal differences increase market uncertainty regarding the direction of Fed policy.
Whether this interest rate cut decision can become a "timely rain" to boost the economy, or if it may hide the risk of an inflation rebound, still requires waiting for Powell's detailed interpretation at the press conference. The global financial markets are closely watching every move of the Fed, hoping to gain clues about the future direction of the economy and monetary policy.
