Hollywood star Matt Damon has finally broken his silence about his involvement in the controversial ad “Fortune Favors the Brave” for a cryptocurrency platform, which became the target of relentless mockery.

During the premiere of his new movie, Damon confessed to the Associated Press, with a noticeable sense of embarrassment, that his main motivation was to help his charity Water.org, which was facing serious financial difficulties:

“We had a terrible year at Water.org and I made that commercial trying to raise funds for the organization.”

This drinking water initiative, founded by Damon in 2009 along with engineer Gary White, aims to facilitate access to clean water through small loans for sanitation facilities. The actor revealed that he had previously donated his entire salary to the foundation due to its desperate financial situation.

The cryptocurrency platform, upon learning of this, donated one million dollars directly to Water.org. “I am sincerely very grateful to them for what they did for our foundation,” added Damon.

The controversial advertisement, launched in October 2021, featured the actor among historical figures such as the Wright brothers and Sir Edmund Hillary, and was spread worldwide on billboards and television.

After the disastrous 2022 for the crypto market, the commercial received massive criticism, turning Damon into the subject of numerous parodies, including appearances on South Park and mentions by hosts like Stephen Colbert.

I wonder if it was really worth sacrificing his reputation for that donation. Perhaps he should have looked for less controversial sponsors for his noble cause, especially considering how the market collapsed shortly after. In the end, his good intentions were overshadowed by the volatility of a sector that many consider a speculative bubble.
