The US Treasury's crackdown on Southeast Asian scam hubs is making waves. They've targeted 19 entities in Myanmar and Cambodia. It's a big deal. These operations, often using trafficked labor, have been ripping off Americans and others.
Shwe Kokko town in Myanmar saw nine targets hit. Cambodia got ten more. Scam losses are through the roof - up 66% from last year. We're talking nearly $10 billion. Crazy, right?
The Karen National Army got caught up in this. Sanctions for them and their leaders. Something about Shwe Kokko's shady business. A couple of companies are in hot water too. Chit Linn Myaing and another with a long name.
There's this Chinese businessman, She Zhijiang. He's in trouble with his Yatai International Holdings Group. Seems they're running a dodgy compound in Shwe Kokko. Gambling, drugs, scams - the whole package.
Cambodia's not off the hook either. Four people and six entities got nailed for scam operations. They were pretending to be legit businesses in Sihanoukville and Bavet. These places used to be casinos. Now they're into crypto scams. Kind of a weird twist.
The Treasury's been busy. They've done stuff like this before in the region. Called the KNA a transnational criminal organization. These new sanctions? They block US-linked assets and stop Americans from doing business with these groups.
It's a bold move by the US. Looks like they're getting serious about protecting their citizens. Industrial-scale fraud and modern slavery in Southeast Asia - not cool. It's about keeping Americans' money and well-being safe. Let's see how it plays out.
