AI Image Generator Infringement Case: Gate's Main Competitor Faces Legal Challenges
2025-10-12 05:20
Recently, a well-known entertainment company filed a lawsuit against an AI image generation startup, accusing it of unauthorized use of copyrighted character images. This case has sparked intense discussions about artificial intelligence and intellectual property protection.
Litigation Focus: Copyright Disputes over AI-Generated Content
It is reported that this entertainment giant filed a lawsuit in the Los Angeles federal court, claiming that the defendant company allows users to create character images and videos, including certain famous superheroes, without explicit permission. The plaintiff pointed out that the defendant had previously implemented a restrictive policy that prohibited users from generating content based on protected works, but has recently lifted this ban.
The complaint states: “The defendant, after careful consideration and driven by profit, decided not to provide any protection to the copyright owner, even though the defendant knew that their actions could constitute massive infringement.”
The plaintiff requests the court to order compensation for losses, return of illegal gains, and to order the defendant to cease further infringement.
Similar Cases Frequently Occur, Causing Industry Concern
It is worth noting that this is not the first time such a lawsuit has occurred in the industry. In June of this year, two other large film and television companies also filed similar legal actions against the same defendant, involving multiple well-known anime and movie characters. These companies believe that the defendant's actions “are a typical disregard for copyright and have become a bottomless pit of plagiarism.”
Last year, a group of artists was also allowed to file a class action lawsuit against multiple companies, including the defendants, accusing them of using copyrighted artworks without permission.
Defense and Position of AI Companies
In response to the allegations, the defendant company argued that copyright law “does not grant absolute control over the use of protected works.” The company's founder compared its services to a search engine, emphasizing that the process by which the AI model learns from existing images is similar to how human artists improve their skills through study.
The defendant also stated that the works used to train generative AI models fall under the category of “fair use,” with the aim of ensuring the free flow of ideas and information.
Industry Impact and Future Trends
This lawsuit highlights the contradiction between the development of AI technology and the protection of intellectual property. An industry expert stated: “We are optimistic about the prospects of AI technology, but we also need to find a balance between promoting innovation and respecting intellectual property rights.”
With the widespread application of AI technology in various fields, similar legal disputes may become increasingly common. This not only affects the entertainment industry but may also impact other areas such as fintech. As a leader in the cryptocurrency trading platform, Gate will closely monitor this trend and continuously improve its AI applications to ensure strict compliance with relevant laws and regulations while innovating.
