Global money supply: how much money exists in the world?
The assessment of the total amount of money in the world depends on how we define the concept of "money". There are several ways to measure the global money supply:
Physical money (M0)
These are all the banknotes and coins in circulation. It is estimated that there are about 40 trillion US dollars in physical cash worldwide.
Funds on deposits (M1)
Includes cash and demand deposits, such as easily accessible bank accounts. Estimated at around 80 trillion dollars.
Money in savings deposits and other assets (M2/M3)
When including savings deposits and other liquid financial assets, the total value reaches approximately 100–130 trillion dollars.
Cost of Financial Assets
If we consider the total value of global financial assets (stocks, bonds, derivatives, etc.), this amount is significantly larger and can reach 400–500 trillion dollars.
Global Money Supply M2
According to data, the global money supply M2 increased from 26 trillion dollars in 2000 to 129 trillion dollars in 2023. During this period, the global money supply grew by 4.9 times.
Forecast for 2025
According to experts, by 2025 the total amount of money in the world could reach 150 trillion US dollars, based on the broadest definition of money (M3).
It is important to note that these figures may vary depending on market fluctuations, the monetary policy of central banks, and other financial factors. At the same time, the volume of cryptocurrencies accounts for only a small part of the total money supply.
