Tether may block USDT funds from Venezuela, a concern for users.

Venezuela is seeking alternatives outside the traditional financial system. All due to the sanctions from the United States. USDT, a flatcoin linked to the dollar, seems like an attractive option. Rumors are circulating that the Central Bank of Venezuela could be using this flatcoin to move funds. Especially in oil operations.

But there is a serious problem. Tether Limited can freeze funds if the U.S. authorities request it. This is no joke. USDT is not decentralized, even though it uses blockchain. The company controls everything.

The numbers are frightening. By September 2025, they have already frozen more than 3.2 billion USD. They have blocked hundreds of digital addresses. Circle is doing the same with USDC.

Daniel Arraez, a crypto expert, makes it clear: having private keys guarantees nothing. Tether intervenes whenever it wants. Venezuela faces a paradox. It depends on something controlled by people who obey those who sanction it.

Does Tether have real backing? We don't know for sure. There are no complete audits.

Some doubt that the BCV officially uses USDT. Perhaps they are officials acting on their own. The risk is borne by individuals, not the State.

Meanwhile, USDT is growing wildly among Venezuelans. With inflation at 97% in 2025, many see it as salvation. The bolívar remains official, but it seems like no one remembers it. On WhatsApp, bolívares are exchanged for USDT all the time. Oil companies pay partial salaries in digital currency because there are no physical dollars.

Asdrúbal Oliveros calls it deep transformation. The USDT solves practical problems, true. But its centralized control is dangerous. As one user said: "It's like giving the keys to your house to someone you don't even know and praying that they don't leave you out on the street."
