What is cryptocurrency: my perspective from the inside

Cryptocurrency is not just digital money on the internet. For me, a person who has invested quite a bit of nerves and resources, it is true digital freedom with a bitter taste of risk.

I have watched for years as this system operates without the intervention of banks. No paperwork, no suits and ties deciding what to do with my funds. Just me and this damn distributed ledger of transactions — blockchain.

Take BTC for example — this is the first digital rebellion against the banking system. When I first sent bitcoin to a friend in Tokyo, I was struck by the thought: "Damn, there is no one standing between us!"

What's the real deal:

• Decentralization - the system operates on the computers of ordinary people around the world, rather than in the offices of officials.
• Transparency — every penny is in plain sight, but it's a double-edged sword.
• Freedom of transfers - you can send money even to Antarctica without bureaucracy.
• Scarcity — there will only be 21 million bitcoins, unlike infinitely printable currencies.

I understand it this way: cryptocurrency is money that cannot be simply taken and blocked for some banker at a call from above. But don't be fooled — trading platforms can pull any trick. I experienced it on my own skin.

And let them say that this is the future of finance. I see how gradually regulators are encroaching on our "free" territory. Today there is relative freedom, and tomorrow — new rules of the game.
