Digital coin: a heads or tails game that always wins

Damn, what an obsession we have with digitizing everything! Even something as simple as tossing a coin in the air has turned into a virtual process. And of course, now it turns out we need a "definitive guide" for something our grandparents did with their eyes closed.

When I face complicated decisions, I myself have fallen into the trap of searching for "coin toss" on my mobile because, let's be honest, who carries coins around these days? Everything is paid with a card or with the mobile.

The internet is flooded with these simulators. There are basic ones, sophisticated ones, with statistics, without them... But are they really random? Allow me to doubt it. Behind every algorithm is a programmer who has defined how that "randomness" works. Do we really trust that Google is not manipulating our virtual coin flips?

Why the hell do we launch coins?

Supposedly to eliminate biases, but isn't it ironic to trust the removal of biases to an algorithm created by humans full of biases? I still throw them to decide where to have dinner with my partner - it's easier than admitting that I actually want pizza for the fifth time this week.

The business behind heads or tails

Google, as always, got into this business. You type "launch coin" and you already have your simulator. No advertising (for now), no commissions... how generous! I'm sure they're not collecting data on your decision-making patterns to sell it to someone.

Then there are those websites and apps dedicated exclusively to launching coins. Is there really a business model behind this? Well, yes, and some even have the audacity to include advertising or premium versions. I would pay to see the face of the investor to whom this business plan was presented!

The "science" of launching

I crack up with those who talk about the "law of large numbers" to justify that their algorithm is reliable. You know what? A real coin doesn't exactly have a 50/50 probability either. It depends on its weight, distribution, how you flip it...

And now they have put blockchain into this. Because of course, what problem isn't solved with blockchain? "We need more transparency in our virtual coin launches". Please!

Companies and their obsession with gamifying everything

Brands use these launches in their campaigns because they lack originality. "Launch the coin and win a discount" - how innovative, almost as exciting as watching paint dry.

It makes sense for teachers to use this to teach probability, but wouldn't it be more authentic to use real coins? At this rate, children won't even know what physical money is.

Why complicate ourselves so much with something that should be simple. If you need to make a decision and you don't have a coin, use rock-paper-scissors or, I don't know, make the decision like adults.

Sometimes I think we've advanced so much that we're going backwards. Digitizing a coin launch is like using a car to go to the bathroom in your own house.

Technology should make our lives easier, not more absurd. But hey, if you need an app to decide whether to order chicken or fish, go ahead. I'll keep using the coin I have in my pocket... when I remember to carry some.
