The advancement of artificial intelligence is facing a significant challenge: the training of high-quality models requires diverse data from around the world, but regulations in various countries hinder the cross-border flow of data. This issue is particularly prominent in the healthcare sector, where although medical data is considered "gold," it cannot be effectively shared due to privacy and Compliance issues, making it difficult to develop practical large-scale models.
However, Openledger's OPEN project and its OPEN token provide a new solution to these challenges. The project not only focuses on the technical aspects but also establishes a new system aimed at achieving Compliance in data usage and fair distribution of benefits.
The complexity of cross-border data sharing should not be underestimated. Europe has GDPR, the United States has HIPAA, and many Asian countries require data localization, which creates significant obstacles for data sharing. For example, if a Chinese AI company wants to use medical data from Europe to train its model, just understanding the compliance requirements of both parties and negotiating with local authorities could take over six months and be very costly. More importantly, the lack of trust between countries also hinders cooperation, as all parties are concerned about data misuse or unfair distribution of benefits, making collaboration difficult.
In this case, the AI model can either rely solely on local data, leading to a "specialized" model; or it risks using unauthorized data, facing compliance risks that affect the stability and sustainability of research and development.
The OPEN project proposes an innovative approach to address these challenges. It avoids the sensitive area of directly transmitting raw data and instead adopts a blockchain-based solution. First, by putting data on the blockchain to establish ownership, it clarifies data ownership and usage rights, thereby reducing disputes during cross-border data sharing. Second, every operation performed using the data for model training or inference is recorded on the blockchain, ensuring transparency and traceability in the process.
This approach not only helps to address legal and trust issues related to data sharing but also provides a more open and fair environment for AI development. Through the OPEN project, all parties can more effectively utilize global data resources while protecting privacy and ensuring compliance with regulations, thus promoting advancements in AI technology. This innovative model may become a new paradigm for future cross-border data sharing and AI development, bringing more opportunities and possibilities to the industry.
