How DigiByte Works: MultiAlgo and MultiShield
In the early development stage, DigiByte launched the pioneering feature MultiAlgo. It allows five independent proof-of-work (PoW) mining algorithms to coexist on the same blockchain. These five equally weighted algorithms are Scrypt, SHA256, Qubit, Skein, and Groestl. DigiByte aims to create a more decentralized network and enhance network security by utilizing multiple algorithms.
In traditional PoW-based systems, miners have specific hardware (such as ASIC miners), which gives them an advantage over those with less specialized equipment. However, in MultiAlgo systems, various mining devices can access the network, thereby balancing the competitive environment and increasing the level of decentralization.
In addition, the introduction of multiple algorithms gives the DigiByte network a stronger ability to resist single algorithm attacks. Even if one algorithm is compromised, other intact algorithms will still function, thereby ensuring the overall security of the network. Furthermore, each time a block is discovered, each algorithm independently adjusts its difficulty, providing additional protection against certain attacks.

MultiShield is another very important feature of DigiByte. It is an advanced difficulty adjustment system that maintains the stability and security of the DigiByte network. MultiShield is a subset of the DigiShield technology that dynamically adjusts the difficulty of DigiByte's five mining algorithms.
In traditional proof-of-work blockchains, if mining power suddenly surges, blocks will be created rapidly, disrupting the stability of the network. Conversely, if mining power sharply declines, block production will significantly slow down. MultiShield dynamically adjusts the mining difficulty after each block generation to address these fluctuations, thereby maintaining a consistent block time, which is not affected by the cumulative mining power of the network.
In addition, each mining algorithm of DigiByte independently adjusts its difficulty. Therefore, MultiShield enhances the network's resilience against attacks on a single algorithm. MultiShield balances five algorithms to create a fairer and more secure mining environment, helping DigiByte achieve its broad goals of decentralization and security.
