Puffer UniFi: A Based Rollup Optimization Solution Based on Heavy Staking

Puffer is leveraging the re-staking technology to build a more efficient Based Rollup solution, aimed at achieving decentralized ordering and enhancing inter-chain liquidity interactions. This solution will bring a different development pattern to the Ethereum ecosystem compared to mainstream Rollups.

Overview of Rollup Technology

Rollup is a blockchain scaling technology that improves transaction processing capacity and reduces costs by processing a large number of transactions off-chain and submitting the results to the main chain. It is mainly divided into two categories:

  1. Optimistic Rollup: Assuming transactions are correct by default, only verifying when there are doubts.
  2. ZK Rollup: Uses zero-knowledge proofs to ensure the legality of transactions.

The core of Rollup is "massive off-chain work, on-chain result verification", which mainly includes two stages: batch packaging and transaction confirmation.

Concept of Based Rollup

The Based Rollup was proposed by Ethereum researcher Justin Drake, optimizing for the role of the sequencer. It shifts the responsibility of transaction sorting from L2 to L1, handled by Ethereum validator nodes. This design avoids the risks of centralized sequencers but also faces performance limitations.

Puffer UniFi Optimization Plan

Puffer UniFi introduces a "pre-confirmation" mechanism to address the performance issues of Based Rollup:

  1. Ethereum validators commit in advance to include specific transactions.
  2. Establish a penalty mechanism to ensure commitment fulfillment.

This method significantly improves transaction confirmation speed without compromising security.

UniFi AVS Implementation

UniFi AVS is a solution based on stake, allowing staked validators to participate in pre-confirmation services. This provides a viable implementation path for Based Rollup and creates new value for staking.

Core Advantages

The main advantages of the UniFi solution include:

  • L1-based decentralized ordering
  • Pre-confirmation technology improves transaction speed
  • Create earnings for re-staking
  • Achieve synchronous composability

Especially in addressing the issue of fragmented liquidity, UniFi achieves seamless interaction between different Rollups through unified ordering at the L1 layer, providing a user experience similar to that of a single chain.

Development Prospects

The differences between Based Rollup and mainstream Rollup solutions reflect different development philosophies. Based Rollup is closer to the Ethereum mainnet, like Ethereum's "vanguard," directly scheduled by the mainnet. In contrast, mainstream Rollup resembles independent "warlords," with greater autonomy but requiring additional coordination mechanisms.

Both of these solutions have their advantages and will coexist and develop according to different application scenarios and demands. Based Rollup has advantages in security and native composability, while mainstream Rollup excels in autonomy and flexibility.

In the future, the blockchain ecosystem will continue to seek a balance between decentralization, efficiency, and benefits, constantly exploring and optimizing various technological solutions to meet diverse application needs.
