South Korea's KOSPI Volatility Soars to 3.6% in H1 2026, Samsung and SK Hynix Account for One-Third

According to a Capital Market Research Institute report on August 5, South Korea's KOSPI daily volatility surged to 3.6% in the first half of 2026, more than double the 1.4% recorded in the prior year. The concentration of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix drove the spike, with the two chipmakers' combined weighting in the KOSPI rising from 23% in early 2025 to 55% by end-June 2026. The institute found that these two stocks accounted for approximately one-third of the overall KOSPI 200 volatility increase. Global semiconductor sector fluctuations, amplified by AI investment concerns, also contributed to the volatility.
