Republican senators in the United States Senate invoke the "nuclear option", speeding up the confirmation of Trump's cabinet nominees.
Jin10 data, September 12 - After negotiations with Democrats broke down, Senate Republicans invoked the so-called "nuclear option" to quickly confirm the second Cabinet nominee of the Trump administration. Republican senators on Thursday passed a new Senate rule by a vote of 53 to 45, allowing for collective confirmation of certain executive nominations, which they said was a necessary measure to combat Democratic obstruction. Senate Majority Leader John Thune used a legislative procedure that allows a simple majority to override Senate rules, setting a new precedent. Republicans hold a majority in the Senate with 53 votes to 47. Thune is currently pushing for the simultaneous confirmation of 48 civilian nominees, most of whom are deputy secretaries of state, assistant secretaries of state, or ambassadors.
