On August 26, a massive collapse of glacial ice, rock, and debris in the Himalayas near the Nepal-Tibet border triggered catastrophic flash floods. Hundreds have died and thousands remain missing.
Satellites captured the collapse and its aftermath. But in the remote mountains, the disaster moved too fast. The problem was not simply a lack of technology. Observation failed to become prediction, warning, communication, and enough time for people to escape.
