I went long SOXL (a 3x leveraged semiconductor ETF) last night and still haven’t closed the position. Here’s a brief review of the trade.
First, what is SOXL? Many people aren’t familiar with it. It’s somewhat like a leveraged ETF in China. The ETF provides 3x daily long exposure by holding leading semiconductor and tech stocks and tracking the PHLX Semiconductor Index. It’s a powerful tool for investors who expect semiconductor stocks to rise in the short term.
Reasons I opened the position yesterday:
1. My outlook on the tech and semiconductor sectors: I think the Nasdaq and AI stocks have entered a choppy bottoming phase, so sharp drops are buying opportunities. After the Nasdaq and tech stocks fell sharply on Monday, I expected a rebound today.
2. The mystical belief that the Nasdaq is bound to rise after U.S. midterm elections: Since 1971, the Nasdaq Composite has risen an average of 25.3% in the year after 13 midterm elections, with only one negative year, in 1986. Expectations for this pattern are especially high this year, and the market may price it in early, so I chose to go long on tech stocks before the midterm elections ended.
3. News of peace talks in the U.S.-Iran war: Reports that the U.S. and Iran were holding peace talks sent oil prices down from their highs, easing inflation expectations and supporting a rebound in Nasdaq tech stocks.
Lessons and reflections:
1. My entry point was poor, and I gave in to the urge to chase the rally: Before the U.S. market opened last night, I impulsively entered at a higher price after seeing the semiconductor index climb. Subsequent moves in the Dow Jones made it difficult to find a good opportunity to close the position and take profits.
2. I didn’t take profits in time: When I got up this morning and saw the semiconductor index surge, greed got the better of me. I wanted to hold out for greater gains and didn’t take profits in time, ultimately turning a profit into a loss.
