Which country's Bitcoin is worth how much (BTC)? El Salvador is at the end of the list!
The crypto data platform CoinGecko has published an updated report regarding the amount of Bitcoin (BTC) held by countries.
According to the report, by April 2025, governments hold a total of 463,741 BTC. This figure accounts for approximately 2.3% of Bitcoin's total supply. However, this amount indicates a decrease from the 529,591 BTC reported in July 2024.
The report states that while some countries are increasing their Bitcoin reserves, others are opting to sell. Countries like El Salvador and Bhutan are actively accumulating BTC, while countries such as the USA and Germany are experiencing a decrease in their reserves.
The United States holds the position of the government with the most Bitcoin, with approximately 198,012 BTC (, which is about 18.3 billion dollars ). However, this amount has shown a slight decrease compared to 2024. In March 2025, with the executive order "Digital Fort Knox" signed by President Donald Trump, the US government began to accumulate its Bitcoin holdings under a strategic reserve.
China, despite the ban on cryptocurrency transactions and mining, ranks second with 194,000 BTC ( worth approximately 17.6 billion dollars ). A large portion of China's Bitcoin assets was obtained through the confiscation from the PlusToken Ponzi scheme in 2019.
The UK ranks third with 61,000 BTC ( valued at approximately 5.6 billion dollars ) seized from criminal activities. The government has not yet made a clear decision regarding the sale of these assets or their use in public financing.
Bhutan has accumulated 8,594 BTC (, approximately 795.4 million dollars ) through sustainable Bitcoin mining using hydroelectric energy. The country is one of the rare governments that obtains Bitcoin through mining instead of direct purchase or confiscation.
El Salvador has maintained its daily 1 BTC purchasing strategy, increasing its reserves to 6.135 BTC and approximately 567.8 million dollars. Under the leadership of President Nayib Bukele, the country continues to integrate Bitcoin into its national economy.
Bitcoin donations to Ukraine have reached a total of 256 BTC, approximately 21.3 million dollars, starting from 2024. These assets were fully liquidated and used for military and humanitarian aid.
Germany has made a significant impact by selling its 46,359 BTC for approximately 3.9 billion dollars in mid-2024.
