How to Trade a Sideways Market
Four rules for sideways markets: 1. Location matters more than direction. Guessing the direction in a sideways market is where losses begin. Only trade at the range boundaries; never trade in the middle. Entering in the middle makes it easy for your stop-loss to get hit no matter where you place it. 2. Cut your position size in half. If you use 2% margin in a trending market, reduce it to 1%–1.5% in a sideways market. False breakouts are common, so you need to leave enough room for error. 3. Take profits quickly; don’t trade a range with trend-market expectations
