Among Turks, there is this bizarre tendency to brag about debt. I tell a guy, “I have 30K in credit card debt, so I shouldn’t spend too much this month,” and he says, “You call that debt? Mine has reached 700K.” I tell someone else, and he says, “If I had that much debt, I’d take out another loan and go on vacation.”

A coffee cup in hand, manicured fingers, a few cleavage photos squeezed in between… That’s all life amounts to. They even pride themselves on being apolitical. No sense of history, no culture to speak of, no knowledge of what’s happening in their own country. Education is mediocre, ethical values are merely for show; the whole point is to be liked and get attention.
