AI Stocks Are Losing Billions, and Crypto Is Feeling the Shockwave: Is This the Beginning of a Broader Risk-Off Market?

The biggest threat to cryptocurrency markets right now may not be coming from inside crypto. It may be coming from Wall Street's technology sector.

On November 5, 2026, US financial markets experienced a sharp technology-led sell-off. The Nasdaq Composite plunged 5.5%, the S&P 500 declined 4.4%, and the semiconductor sector suffered particularly heavy losses. Bitcoin also dropped approximately 5%, falling back toward $76,000.

This development reveals an important connection between traditional financial markets and digital assets: when investors lose confidence in high-growth technology stocks, cryptocurrency can become another source of risk exposure they choose to reduce.

WHAT TRIGGERED THE AI SELL-OFF?

The main concern is no longer simply whether artificial intelligence has a future. Investors are questioning whether the enormous investments being made in AI infrastructure can generate sufficient financial returns.

Technology companies are committing billions of dollars to data centers, advanced chips, computing infrastructure and electricity capacity.

However, rising capital expenditure, financing requirements and uncertainty about future profitability are creating pressure on valuations.

The latest market reaction was particularly severe:

• Nasdaq Composite: approximately -5.5%.
• S&P 500: approximately -4.4%.
• Nvidia: approximately -9.3%.
• AMD: approximately -17.3%.
• Bitcoin: approximately -5% during the sell-off.

Political and regulatory uncertainty following the US midterm elections added another layer of pressure, particularly around future data-center expansion.

WHY IS CRYPTO AFFECTED?

There are three important connections.

First, institutional risk management. Many investors hold technology stocks and cryptocurrencies within broader portfolios. When volatility increases, they may reduce exposure across multiple risk-sensitive assets.

Second, liquidity and leverage. Falling prices can trigger margin calls and forced liquidations. This creates additional selling pressure, especially in cryptocurrency derivatives markets.

Third, AI infrastructure exposure. Several Bitcoin mining companies have expanded into AI and high-performance computing. Concerns about data-center investment can therefore affect both technology stocks and crypto-related businesses.

According to CoinShares' November 6 market update, more than $1 billion in leveraged cryptocurrency positions were liquidated during the November 5 sell-off.

THE IMPORTANT QUESTION: IS THIS A CRYPTO-SPECIFIC CRISIS?

Not necessarily.

The simultaneous weakness in technology stocks and cryptocurrencies suggests that broader risk reduction is an important driver.

However, this does not mean crypto is completely disconnected from its own market fundamentals. ETF flows, institutional positioning, stablecoin liquidity, derivatives exposure and Bitcoin network demand still matter.

WHAT SHOULD INVESTORS WATCH?

I would monitor three developments:

1. Bitcoin's price structure: Whether BTC can establish support around recent trading levels or continues making lower lows.

2. US technology stocks: A sustained recovery in the Nasdaq and semiconductor sector could help restore broader risk appetite.

3. Leverage and liquidity: Falling open interest and reduced liquidation pressure could indicate that excessive speculative positioning is being cleared.

MY MARKET PERSPECTIVE

I believe the current situation represents an important test for the relationship between traditional financial markets and cryptocurrency.

AI remains a potentially transformative technology, and a correction in AI stocks does not automatically mean the long-term industry outlook has collapsed.

Similarly, Bitcoin's decline does not independently establish that its long-term fundamentals have weakened.

However, investors should recognize that when liquidity becomes expensive and risk appetite disappears, even fundamentally strong assets can experience significant selling pressure.

My approach is to prioritize capital protection, avoid excessive leverage and wait for confirmation before treating a market rebound as a sustainable recovery.

The most important lesson is this:

Crypto does not trade in isolation anymore. Global liquidity, technology valuations, institutional positioning and macroeconomic expectations increasingly influence its direction.

When Wall Street catches a cold, the crypto market can feel the fever.
