$NVDA
Democrats gained ground in Congress and several states, raising market concerns that tighter AI regulation and local restrictions on data center construction could delay investment in U.S. AI infrastructure. UBS analysts estimate that about 30% of the data center capacity expected to be added in the U.S. in 2028 could be affected by potential construction moratoriums.
In addition, valuation pressures and financing concerns that had built up in the AI industry were also released in this sell-off. The Federal Reserve's policy outlook added further pressure to the market: Cleveland Fed President Hammack and Richmond Fed President Barkin both sent hawkish signals on Thursday, suggesting that rate hikes remain possible. This downturn therefore looks more like a repricing of the AI trade, with deleveraging merely amplifying the losses. Chip stocks fell the hardest, signaling market concern that data center construction could slow.
Why this looks more like an AI revaluation
Election as the trigger: Democrats won both chambers, prompting market concerns about tighter data center approvals and increased AI regulation.
Losses were most concentrated: The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell about 12%, its worst day since March 2020.
Nvidia led the decline: It fell about 9% in a single day, wiping nearly $450 billion off its market capitalization.
Leverage amplified the decline: Retail selling triggered futures risk controls and forced liquidations of leveraged ETFs, accelerating the fall.
Comparing the three sectors
Chips (most worth watching): They depend directly on data center orders; AMD, Micron, and SanDisk all fell more than 17%, making short-term risks the greatest.
Big Tech (clear divergence): Apple was relatively less affected, while cloud providers like Microsoft and Google will need to show that AI investment can translate into profits.
Other sectors (more defensive): Money is starting to move toward defensive heavyweights, but industrials, financials, and consumer stocks are also falling, and no sector is immune.
Watch chip stocks first. If data center restrictions take effect, chip demand expectations could be revised down further; if this is merely panic, there may be room for a recovery after the steep decline. $NVDA {currencycard:stock}(NVDA)
