Is artificial intelligence shifting from infrastructure to application?

Are the markets experiencing the growing pains of a transition from the infrastructure phase of the AI revolution to the application and profitability phase? The Nasdaq’s historic 5.52% single-day drop is not merely a panic sell-off; it also signals a rotation of capital away from the "chips and data centers" narrative toward software giants that generate actual revenue and profit. During this transitional period, defining a clear strategy ahead of critical macroeconomic data releases is more important than ever.

What lies at the heart of this historic sell-off?

Thursday’s decline marked the sharpest drop since April 2025, wiping out approximately $2.5 trillion in market capitalization. Semiconductors were at the center of the downturn; the semiconductor index plummeted 12%—its worst performance since March 2020—with Nvidia falling 9% and AMD dropping 17%.

The sell-off was triggered by the Democrats securing a majority in both chambers of Congress during the U.S. midterm elections. The market is pricing in the expectation that this political shift will lead to stricter regulations on the construction of AI data centers. The electorate’s apparent desire to curb the expansion of these facilities has prompted investors to ask: have AI-related expenditures reached their peak? These fears were further fueled by an executive’s admission that building data centers is becoming increasingly difficult, alongside forecasts suggesting that capital expenditure growth in the sector will peak in 2027.

Where is this capital rotation heading?

This is where the real story begins: capital is shifting from infrastructure to application. Investors will now reward not only the companies that manufacture chips and servers, but also those that successfully convert this technology into revenue.

Google stands out with its AI-powered search and advertising revenue. In the first quarter of 2026, its cloud revenue surged by 63% to reach $20 billion, with a backlog of orders exceeding $460 billion. A 19% increase in search revenue proves that artificial intelligence has not destroyed Google’s core business model—on the contrary, it has strengthened it.

Microsoft and Amazon are leaders in the monetization of cloud and artificial intelligence. Azure grew by 40%, while AWS saw 28% growth. The fact that Microsoft’s annual AI-related revenue has surpassed $37 billion demonstrates that this technology has become a tangible source of income.

Meta, Palantir, and Oracle present different profiles regarding growth in enterprise AI. Palantir offers the prospect of high growth and high profit margins—evidenced by a 93% revenue increase and a 60% operating margin—though its valuation, at 87 times sales, carries inherent risk. Meanwhile, Oracle stands out with 121% growth in its cloud infrastructure segment; however, this expansion is being financed through negative free cash flow and increased borrowing.

What is the critical balance on the macro front ahead of the NFP (Non-Farm Payrolls) report?

Markets have now turned their full attention to the Non-Farm Payrolls data, set to be released today. Expectations point to approximately 65,000 new jobs and an unemployment rate remaining steady at 4.2%. The truly critical factor is how this data will influence the Federal Reserve’s interest rate policy.

The market is currently pricing in a 68% probability of an interest rate hike in December. If the data comes in above expectations, it could reinforce the narrative of a strong economy, bolster expectations for interest rate hikes, and increase pressure on risk assets. Conversely, weaker data might provide the Federal Reserve with more breathing room. This uncertainty is also critical for cryptocurrencies; as Bitcoin attempts to maintain its vital support level at $76,000, it requires a signal of support from macroeconomic data to break through the resistance band between $78,800 and $80,000.

How should the strategy for this new phase be interpreted?

The current landscape sends a clear message to investors: simply mentioning "artificial intelligence" is no longer enough. The market is now focused on how—and how profitably—companies are monetizing this technology. Concerns regarding a potential slowdown in infrastructure spending may shift the spotlight toward companies operating at the application and software layers.

While macroeconomic data will dictate the short-term direction during this transition, the medium-term winners will be those capable of translating the AI revolution into tangible financial results.

What is the takeaway here?

It is too early to declare the "infrastructure story" over, but it is certainly beginning to be questioned. Key factors to monitor include whether growth in cloud revenue is successfully converting into free cash flow, whether core business areas—such as search and advertising—are being strengthened by AI, and how data center configurations are influencing the timing of peak capital expenditures.

As for Bitcoin, it remains in a consolidation phase—trapped between support at $76,000 and resistance in the $78,800–$80,000 range—with its next move contingent on macroeconomic data. Ultimately, the question remains the same for both equities and cryptocurrencies: is it about spending, or is it about profitability?
