In early Asian trading, gold was range-bound near $4,097, with last night's pullback after a sharp rally leaving the suspense for tonight.
Spot gold briefly hit a two-week high of $4,147 during Thursday's US session, then retreated as the sell-off in US stocks intensified, eventually closing at $4,088.33, with gains narrowing to 0.69%. Early today, gold repeatedly swung between $4,085 and $4,100,
reclaiming $4,100 only to lose it again, as neither bulls nor bears dare to make a move ahead of the nonfarm payrolls report.
Last night's rally drew support from two sources. First was the steep drop in US tech stocks. The Nasdaq retreated sharply, and funds flowed into Treasuries as a safe haven, pushing the 10-year Treasury yield down to around 4.82% intraday, its lowest level since early September.
Second, expectations for a December rate hike cooled significantly, with the implied probability indicated by interest rate futures falling from around 83% on Wednesday to 66%-69%. Falling yields and softer rate-hike expectations gave gold fuel to rally. But its failure to hold $4,147 shows the market remains wary of tonight's nonfarm payrolls report.
The market broadly expects around 65,000 nonfarm jobs to have been added in October, up from 29,000 in September; the unemployment rate is expected to hold at 4.2%, while average hourly earnings may rebound to 0.3% month over month.
The key factor is that Wednesday's ADP data came in at 86,000, far above the expected 69,000, setting the stage for a strong nonfarm payrolls figure. If tonight's report is similarly strong, especially if wage growth picks up, expectations for a December rate hike will be pushed back up, weakening gold's footing above $4,100 and putting support at $4,080 directly to the test.
Technically, the current structure is very clear. $4,077-$4,080 is where the 21-day moving average sits, as well as the support zone repeatedly tested after last night's pullback; this is the short-term bulls' line in the sand. If gold holds above this zone at the close, it can continue to consolidate between $4,080 and $4,150; a decisive break below it on heavy volume would bring the $4,000 mark back into view. $4,147-$4,150 is last night's rally high and a level the short-term bears must defend. Further up, $4,203-$4,205 is a strong resistance zone where the 50-day and 100-day moving averages converge; without a clear boost from the nonfarm payrolls report, gold has no chance of reaching it.
Resistance levels: $4,147-$4,150, $4,175-$4,180, $4,203-$4,205
Support levels: $4,077-$4,080, $4,045-$4,050, $4,000-$4,005
Trading plan, short: Sell on a rebound to $4,140-$4,147, stop at $4,175, targets $4,110-$4,085
Long: Buy on a pullback to $4,077-$4,082, stop at $4,055, targets $4,120-$4,140
Before tonight's nonfarm payrolls report is released, neither bulls nor bears will show all their cards. If price approaches $4,140-$4,147 and meets resistance, that's an opportunity to go short; if it pulls back to $4,077-$4,082 and finds support, consider a small long position. Everything in between is noise.
The nonfarm payrolls report is the only judge tonight. Volatility will be sharpest in the first 5-10 minutes after the data comes out; wait for the first wave of emotion to pass, then act based on the strength of a pullback or rebound. Keep positions light and don't bet heavily on a direction before the data.
