Tomorrow’s jobs report might be the most “good news is complicated” data point of the month. A few days ago I would have said strong jobs equals bullish. In this market, I’m not sure that’s true anymore.

1. Why a strong number isn’t automatically good

The Fed held rates at 3.75% to 4.00% on Oct 28, but the conversation isn’t about cuts. It’s about whether another hike comes in December, and futures are pricing that at roughly 80%. The 10-year yield is sitting near 4.9%. So the data isn’t judged by “is the economy fine?” It’s judged by “does this make the Fed hike more or less likely?”

2. The bar was already set

ADP printed +86K against forecasts of roughly 69K to 75K, depending on the survey. That’s a beat, but ADP has been a poor guide to the official number. The official consensus is roughly 60K to 75K for October, with unemployment expected to hold at 4.2%. September’s official print was only 29K, so the error band here is wide. One report can easily surprise by 50K either way.

3. The asymmetry nobody mentions

If a hike is already priced near 80%, a hot report can only add about 20 percentage points of probability, because the ceiling is 100%. A soft report can remove far more. My read: the upside surprise is partly absorbed, while the downside surprise has more room to move rates. That’s my own reasoning, not a forecast.

4. How I’d map the outcomes

Hot (100K+ and unemployment at 4.1% or lower): hike odds firm up, yields push toward 5%, and gold, BTC and rate-sensitive tech tend to feel it first.
In line (roughly 40K to 90K): probably a choppy reaction, with the market arguing with itself.
Soft (under 30K, or unemployment at 4.3%+): hike odds drop and yields ease, which helps gold and BTC. But if it reads as a slowdown scare instead, stocks may not like it.

5. Levels from my charts

BTC around 80,400: resistance at 82,108 (+2.1%) and 84,184 (+4.7%), support at 77,136 (-4.1%) and 76,260 (-5.1%).

Gold around 4,117: resistance at 4,215 (+2.4%), support at 4,035 (-2.0%), 3,990 (-3.1%) and 3,847 (-6.5%). Gold’s MACD is still below zero but just crossed above its signal line, so the bounce is early, not confirmed.

I’d rather watch how each asset reacts in the first hour than guess the direction in advance.

My take: I’m not positioning before the number. With the release at 21:30 UTC+8, spreads and wicks will be ugly, and I’d rather wait for the first 30 to 60 minutes. The asset I care about most is gold, because it’s the cleanest read on whether the market is pricing “more hikes” or “less hikes”. If the hike story fades, I’d expect BTC to follow gold’s lead.

Not financial advice.

Which would you rather trade into this report: gold, BTC or tech? And do you think a hot print is already half-priced after ADP, or is the market underestimating it?
