Taiwan stocks are now tradable with USDT on Gate. 19 names in the first batch, including TSMC and MediaTek. I’m not going to cheer about it, so here is how I’d look at it before touching it.
1. What actually launched
19 stocks listed on the Taiwan exchange, bought with USDT through the existing stock account. Besides TSMC and MediaTek, the list includes Hon Hai, Quanta, Chunghwa Telecom and Fubon Financial. So it’s mostly semis, AI servers, electronics and some finance. Prices and P&L show in TWD, while fees are deducted in USDT.
2. The hidden second trade is the currency
You fund in USDT, but the stock lives in TWD. Your real return is the stock move multiplied by the currency move. Hypothetical example: a stock gains 6% while TWD weakens 2% against the dollar, and you end up around +3.9% in USDT terms. Flip it, with the stock down 6% and TWD down 2%, and you’re at about -7.9%. Because the screen shows P&L in TWD, I’d always check the USDT value, not just the TWD number.
3. You’re not buying “Taiwan”, you’re buying one theme
TSMC alone is roughly 30% or more of Taiwan’s main index. Add MediaTek, Hon Hai and Quanta, and almost everything is tied to AI chips and servers. So 19 tickers isn’t diversification. It’s mostly one AI-hardware trade with a currency twist. If AI spending sentiment turns, these names tend to fall together.
4. The fine print I’d read first
Hours run 09:00 to 13:25 UTC+8 on Taiwan trading days. That’s about 4 hours 25 minutes, roughly 18% of a 24-hour day. Anything that happens in US markets overnight shows up as a gap at the next open, and you can’t react until the session starts.
Costs matter too. Taiwan’s local securities tax on sells is commonly quoted at 0.3%. I haven’t seen how it’s handled in this product, so check the fee schedule. If it applies, 0.3% is 15% of a 2% gain before any trading fee.
The local exchange also commonly caps daily moves at about ±10%. In a panic, a stock can sit at its limit and be hard to exit. Check whether that applies here.
5. The risks, plainly
Concentration in one theme, FX exposure, overnight gap risk, and a brand-new product where I don’t know the spreads or depth yet. Check the order book before sizing. Separately, there are also perpetual contracts on some Taiwan names with up to 20x leverage. That’s a different animal: at 20x, a 5% move against you wipes out 100% of margin.
My take: useful access, not free money. If you want AI-hardware exposure without moving funds through a traditional broker, the USDT route is convenient. But convenience isn’t an edge. I’d treat it as a theme position, size it small, check the USDT-based result and stay away from leverage.
Not financial advice.
Would you hold TSMC alone, or spread across MediaTek, Hon Hai and Quanta? And does the TWD exposure change how you’d size it?
