Why did SK Hynix stock pull back despite record results?

There's an interesting divergence in memory. SK Hynix shares closed down approximately 5.1% at $143.09 on November 4th, continuing their pullback from the recent peak of $166.06, and stabilizing around $1.01 trillion in market capitalization. The decline came despite the company announcing record third-quarter results and a comprehensive capital restructuring program.

In short, the financials are at their peak, but the pricing is moving away from that peak. This seems to be digesting the shift from an earnings-driven rally to a valuation reassessment.

What's in the record figures?

Third-quarter revenue reached 104.6 trillion won, a 32% quarterly increase and a 328% year-on-year increase, exceeding the 100 trillion won mark for the first time. Operating profit increased by 38% consecutively to 83.3 trillion won, representing a record operating margin of approximately 80%. Net profit 39.8 trillion won, EBITDA 87.7 trillion won.

These are not just growth figures, but also a peak in margins. An unprecedented profitability picture in the memory sector.

Why is the supply sold out until 2029?

The company confirmed that DRAM and HBM production volumes are effectively sold out until 2029, with long-term agreements already covering more than 50% of total capacity for 2027 and 2028.

HBM4 mass production and shipments began in the third quarter, and sixth-generation chips are expected to become the main product from the fourth quarter onwards. So, the next generation is already in operation on the product side, not just existing capacity but also the next generation is being reserved.

How large is the shareholder refund?

SK Hynix announced a shareholder return plan of approximately 100 trillion won, or about $84.5 billion, for fiscal year 2026, reportedly structured as over 30 trillion won in cash dividends and 60 trillion won in share buybacks and cancellations.

This scale demonstrates the strength of the company's cash generation, but it also shifts the market's focus from profit to capital allocation.

Why is the market selling despite this?

Looking at it from a long-term and dialectical perspective, the current price action reflects the market digesting its shift from an earnings-focused rally to a valuation accounting approach. Fundamental indicators remain exceptionally strong, with memory supply tightness expected to persist until 2030 due to the expansion of AI infrastructure investments.

But the structural tension lies in the gap between reported earnings and forward-looking expectations. Although third-quarter results exceeded consensus, the suspension of NAND subsidiary Solidigm's planned US listing due to market conditions and shareholder opposition removed a potential catalyst that could have unlocked value. The sharp downward pressure over the past three months also reflects concerns about the sustainability of peak margins as capital expenditures are expected to increase significantly in 2027.

On the forward demand side, Chinese cloud providers are supporting the market by approaching memory suppliers for long-term agreements of up to 10 years. If finalized, these contracts would extend demand visibility beyond the current cycle, but scale and pricing are yet to be disclosed.

What should you prioritize?

In a company with record earnings and contractual revenue accumulation, does the execution of long-term agreements or short-term valuation pressure outweigh the downside?

On one hand, sold capacity until 2029 and an 80% margin; on the other, increased capital expenditures and the suspension of the listing plan. In the short term, valuation pressure is creating downside, while in the medium term, supply visibility offers structural support.

What you need to watch is how long-term contracts will turn out in terms of price and scale, and how much capital expenditures will erode margins.
