Why is the labor market giving mixed signals ahead of the non-farm payrolls report?

The US labor market is sending mixed signals ahead of the October non-farm payrolls report, creating a complex landscape for risky assets and industrial metals.

Private sector employment increased by 86,000 in October, exceeding expectations of 67,000, with wage growth remaining strong at 3.2% year-on-year. Markets are awaiting Friday's official report, with expectations of a 65,000 increase and unemployment remaining at 4.2%.

Why are interest rate expectations back on the agenda?

The stronger-than-expected data reinforces a narrative of a resilient labor market and keeps alive the idea that the Fed may maintain a tight path for longer.

A strong report, above 80,000, could revive interest rate hike expectations, put pressure on risky assets, and support the dollar. A weak report, below 65,000, could ease interest rate pressure and provide a relief valve for Bitcoin and precious metals. Therefore, the headline figure alone will determine the direction.

Where is the critical level for Bitcoin?

Technically, immediate resistance is in the 81,000-82,000 range, with a stronger supply zone between 85,000 and 87,000. Critical support remains in the 76,000-77,000 range, coinciding with the 0.5 Fibonacci retracement and the average cost base of recent buyers.

A break below 76,000 could bring the 73,000-74,000 region into play, while a recovery above 82,000 could open the way towards the upper resistance band. In short, 76,000 is the dividing line between whether the medium-term structure will shift from neutral to positive or to a deeper correction.

Why is silver in a correction?

Silver is trading around $49-50, having corrected from its recent peak of $54.68. The main support zone is $48.50-$48.80; a break below this could accelerate the downward momentum and trigger a move towards the psychological $45 level.

A clear break above $52.30-$52.50 is needed for an upward reversal, which would signal a change in the short-term trend. Macroeconomic pressure stems from interest rate expectations, but the physical supply side remains supportive.

Why is copper structurally strong?

Copper in London is holding above $14,000 a ton, below its September peak of $14,875, but supported by persistent supply tightness. Supply challenges, such as the lowest quarterly production in decades in Chile, provide a structural floor for prices.

Macro headwinds from interest rate uncertainty are limiting upside, but the physical market remains tight, creating a high-volatility and range-bound environment.

What should you look at in the long term?

Looking at the long term and dialectically, the current configuration reflects a divergence between short-term macroeconomic data and medium-term structural trends. Labor market resilience keeps the Fed's path uncertain, limiting upside for risky assets and supporting the dollar. But supply constraints in copper and oversold conditions in silver indicate that physical market dynamics are in place.

For Bitcoin, the 76,000 level is the dividing line. Maintaining this position keeps the medium-term structure from neutral to positive; losing it means a shift to a deeper correction narrative. The upcoming non-farm payrolls report is an immediate catalyst; a strong result will challenge the support test, while a weak one could fuel a relief rally towards 82,000.

For silver and copper, macroeconomic pressure stemming from interest rate expectations is the main headwind, but the supply-side story offers a structural proposition. The divergence between paper prices and physical consolidation in copper, and the technical struggle around 48.80 in silver, are the key variables to watch.

If BTC breaks through the 82k resistance zone, it could start a new uptrend. Watch nonfarm payrolls first

Copper paper prices and the physical market are diverging. This divergence will eventually correct, but the direction is hard to predict

Copper is struggling to hold above 14,000. The supply story sounds compelling, but whether demand can keep up is what matters

If nonfarm payrolls come in below 65k, BTC and precious metals can catch a breather; above 80k, things get uncomfortable

Short-term macro and medium-term structure are at odds. This is the most punishing kind of market, so manage position sizes carefully

With wage growth so sticky at 3.2%, rate cut expectations will be pushed back again
