#GoldBreaksAbove4100 GOLD AT $4,114: THE $4,100 BREAK IS REAL INTRADAY, NOT YET A CLOSE
Gate spot gold (XAUT) last traded at $4,113.90. The session high is $4,116.80, and the day opened at $4,050.50. COMEX December futures printed $4,137.30 at 02:35 UTC, up about 1.6% on the day.
What "breaking above $4,100" means here
The 5 November candle is still open, so no daily close above $4,100 exists yet. The last daily close above $4,100 came on 21 October, at $4,125. Since then, gold closed at $4,030 on 22 October and rebounded from the $3,882 low on 30 October. The current move is a reclaim of the zone, not a confirmed breakout.
The daily path
Gold closed at $3,881.80 on 30 October, then pushed to $3,893.60 on 1 November, $3,938.70 on 2 November, and $3,934.70 on 3 November. The 4 November candle closed at $4,050.60, a daily gain of about 2.9%. Today's candle has already added roughly 1.6%. That is a clean three-day recovery, but it is still inside the broader October range between about $3,995 and $4,190.
Moving averages: still below the big trend lines
The 7-day average is about $3,940, below price. The 30-day average is about $4,072, and the 30-day EMA about $4,058. Price has just crossed the 30-day line. The 120-day average sits near $4,218, the 200-day average near $4,297, and the 200-day EMA near $4,351. Gold remains below its long-term averages, so the trend is still down on that timeframe.
Bollinger Bands
The middle band is about $4,029, the upper band about $4,213 and the lower band about $3,846. Price is above the middle band, with the upper band near $4,213 as the next band-based resistance. The band width has widened, which signals higher volatility.
RSI and stochastic
RSI is about 50.4, neutral and not yet overbought. The stochastic readings are near 44 for %K and about 28 for %D, which leaves room for a further move before momentum stretches. Williams %R is about -30, consistent with a market that has recovered off lows but not yet reached an extreme.
MACD
The MACD line is about 3.6 and the signal line about -61.8, but the difference field reads about -58. These fields are not consistent with each other in the feed, so I do not treat a crossover as confirmed. Momentum is improving, but the MACD signal needs a clean cross on the daily chart before it counts as a confirmed buy trigger.
Trend strength
ADX is about 36.5, with the +DI at about 27.8 and the -DI at about 25.7. That reading shows a strong trend, but the two lines are close, so direction is still contested. A widening gap in favor of +DI would be the confirmation buyers need.
Key levels
Support sits at $4,050, which is the 4 November close and the first defense. Below it, $4,030 from 22 October, then $4,000 as a psychological and structural floor. The 30-day average near $4,072 now sits between price and the break zone.
Resistance sits at $4,117, which is today's intraday high, followed by $4,125 from the 21 October close and $4,133 from 19 October. Above that, the Bollinger upper band near $4,213 and the 120-day average near $4,218 form the next meaningful ceiling.
Positioning and flows
Open interest in gold perpetuals rose about 12% over 24 hours, a sign that new positions are being opened into the move. The long-short ratio is about 1.56, which leans long. The funding rate is slightly positive at about 0.002, so longs are paying a modest premium rather than being squeezed. The taker buy-sell ratio is close to 1.04, meaning buyers were marginally more aggressive. Rising open interest during a rally can support further upside, but it also raises the risk of a sharp reversal if the move fails.
What is driving gold
Reports attribute the move to the US midterm result and the reduced political uncertainty it produced, which lifted risk appetite and weakened the dollar at the margin. Oil remains volatile, with Brent around $103 amid the Iran conflict, which keeps an inflation hedge bid under gold.
The macro backdrop is still restrictive. Third-quarter US GDP grew 3.4% and core PCE inflation reached 3.1% in September. Earlier reporting put the odds of a December Fed rate hike near 81%. That figure is dated 29 October and may have shifted, so check the current futures pricing before relying on it. A hawkish Fed keeps pressure on non-yielding assets like gold.
Friday's US payrolls report is the next catalyst. A soft print would strengthen the case for lower real yields and support gold. A strong print with firm wages would revive the hike debate and test the $4,050 floor.
My technical view
Gold has recovered its October losses and is pressing into the $4,100 to $4,130 band, which was support on the way down and now becomes the test of whether buyers can hold the zone. The move has real momentum behind it: open interest is rising, the trend strength is high, and price has reclaimed the 30-day average.
The reasons for caution are equally clear. The 120-day and 200-day averages are well above price, and the MACD signal has not been confirmed. Gold has failed near $4,100 before, most recently in late October.
Bull case: A daily close above $4,130 that holds on the next pullback would confirm the breakout, with the Bollinger upper band near $4,213 as the next target and the 120-day average as the level to clear after that.
Bear case: A daily close back below $4,050 would signal that the reclaim has failed. The next test is $4,030, then $4,000. A break under $4,000 would reopen the $3,880 October low.
My stance: I would wait for a daily close above $4,130 before calling the breakout confirmed. Chasing the intraday high near $4,117 with open interest rising into a macro event is a higher-risk entry.
The 5 November daily close against $4,100, the $4,050 floor on any pullback, Friday's payrolls, and whether the MACD signal line finally crosses.
