#SKHynixFallsNearly7% #SKHynix SK Hynix Falls Nearly 7%: Technical Breakdown of the Memory Leader
SK Hynix closed at 1,418,000 won on 30 October 2026, down 7.08% on the day, after losing the 1,500,000 won handle. The drop was sharp, but it was not random. It came after an extended rally, a wave of disappointing US tech earnings, and renewed doubts about whether heavy AI spending will earn a return. The chart tells the story of a stock that ran too far, too fast, and then reversed through a psychological level.
What happened on the day
The Bloomberg Asia Chip Stocks Index fell more than 4.5% at its worst. SK Hynix and Japan's Advantest each dropped nearly 9% intraday. Samsung Electronics fell more than 6%, and the KOSPI dropped more than 5.6%, which triggered a sidecar halt on the Korea Exchange. TSMC was down about 2%. The sell-off was broad, but SK Hynix was among the hardest hit because it carried so much of the rally.
Why the technical setup mattered
Before the drop, SK Hynix had posted record results and a large shareholder return plan. The stock had climbed rapidly on that news. When a stock moves that far in a short time, it is often stretched above its moving averages. A sharp move down from that position is typical of a flush, where weak hands sell into the first break of support.
The 1,500,000 won level was the key line. It was the handle that buyers had defended on the way up, and losing it on a closing basis changed the tone. Once that level broke, the market had to find a new floor, and the next visible support zone was well below.
The key levels now
The first level to watch is the 1,400,000 won area. The 30 October close sits near 1,418,000 won, and the 3 November close was roughly in the 1,398,000 to 1,400,000 won range based on the intraday low of 1,303,000 won being about 6.8% below that close. That zone now acts as resistance. A rally that stalls below it would confirm the breakdown.
The recent low of about 1,303,000 won, reached intraday on 4 November, is the level that matters most for bulls. A daily close below it would open a deeper retest. A daily close above 1,418,000 won would show that buyers have recovered the breakdown area.
The 1,500,000 won handle is the longer-term reference. Reclaiming it would require a sustained move, not a one-day bounce.
Momentum and averages
I did not verify SK Hynix's RSI, MACD or 20-day and 50-day moving averages from a reliable feed for this post, so I am not quoting them. Those are the indicators to check on any chart. The shape of the move is clear enough without them: a sharp reversal from a stretched rally, a loss of a major round-number level, and a rebound that has so far only partly repaired the damage.
What the rebound tells us
On 4 November, SK Hynix traded as low as about 1,303,000 won, then recovered to close only slightly lower than the prior session, roughly 0.14% down, according to a FourWeekMBA analysis of Korea Exchange data. Samsung also recovered much of its intraday loss. That late recovery suggests dip buyers were active, but it does not yet confirm a trend reversal.
The KOSPI has been volatile this year. It was near 7,000 in September, fell to about 5,300 in October on concerns about AI profitability and foreign outflows, and recovered toward 6,000 before swinging again. The index closed at 5,683.80 on 4 November, up 0.62%, showing that the broad market is still searching for direction.
Why this stock matters so much
SK Hynix is a leading supplier of memory chips, including high-bandwidth memory used in AI accelerators. Its results depend heavily on the AI build-out, which means its share price reflects expectations about future spending by large technology companies. When those expectations wobble, memory stocks move first and often the most.
Samsung and SK Hynix together carry a large weight in the KOSPI. That concentration means one sector's sentiment can drive the whole market. The same was true for TSMC and Taiwan's market during the recent AI chip sell-off.
The bear case
The bear case rests on three points. First, the rally was extended, so a pullback was likely. Second, AI capex is being questioned, and any cut or delay in hyperscaler spending would hit memory demand. Third, a close below 1,303,000 won would signal that the support zone has failed and that sellers still control the trend.
The bull case
The bull case rests on the record earnings, the large shareholder return plan, and the fact that the stock recovered intraday from its low. A close back above 1,418,000 won, followed by a hold on any pullback, would strengthen the argument that the sell-off was a shakeout rather than the start of a trend change.
My view
I see this as a technical flush inside a cyclical uptrend that has not yet proved it can hold. The loss of 1,500,000 won matters, and the next test is whether the stock can reclaim the 1,400,000 to 1,418,000 won zone on a closing basis. Until it does, I would treat rallies as tests of resistance rather than confirmed recoveries.
Watch the 1,303,000 won low as the line in the sand. Watch the 1,418,000 won close as the first sign of repair. Watch the KOSPI's ability to hold above 5,600, and watch hyperscaler capex commentary for the fundamental signal. Those levels and signals will say more than any single session.
