Account security is one of those things most traders take seriously only after something goes wrong. A compromised password, a fake login page or an unauthorized device can put an entire account at risk within minutes.
Gate has introduced its Gate Security Guardian program to provide eligible users with an additional layer of account protection, including the possibility of compensation for certain unauthorized asset transfers.
What makes this initiative interesting is that it goes beyond ordinary security alerts. Under specific conditions, eligible users can submit a compensation claim of up to $200,000 per approved incident.
The program focuses on three major security threats.
The first is phishing and malware. Fraudulent websites, fake login pages and malicious software can expose account credentials and create opportunities for unauthorized access.
The second involves device compromise and remote access. If someone gains control of a user's phone or computer, they may be able to perform account activities without the owner's knowledge.
The third is SIM swapping or SIM theft. Criminals may fraudulently obtain control of a phone number and attempt to exploit account recovery or verification processes.
These are real security risks in the digital asset industry, which is why additional protection mechanisms deserve attention.
However, access to Gate Security Guardian comes with eligibility requirements.
Users need a security score of at least 80 out of 100, completed KYC Level 2 verification and a good account standing, along with the required security measures.
Eligible users can activate the program through the Gate app by visiting Profile, Security Center and Gate Security Guardian.
There is also an important detail that users should understand before applying.
Protection does not begin immediately after activation. Instead, the account enters a 30-day security-strengthening period. During this period, the security score must remain at 80 or above continuously.
After successfully completing this period, the account becomes eligible for Protection Active status.
If the score falls below 80, protection is suspended. Users who restore their score within 48 hours can restart the qualification process. Otherwise, the application is terminated and a new application requires another 30-day period.
The compensation process also has specific conditions.
An incident must occur while Protection Active status is in effect, and the required security conditions must have been maintained during the preceding 30 days.
Users must contact the security team through the My Protection section within 45 days of the incident. Supporting documentation, including a formal law enforcement report and relevant transaction records, is also required.
It is equally important to understand what the program does not cover.
Transactions personally initiated or authorized by the account holder, transfers made under another person's instructions, mistaken transactions and losses caused by market price fluctuations are excluded.
Most importantly, Gate Security Guardian should not be confused with traditional insurance. Compensation is subject to eligibility, investigation and the program's rules. Submitting a claim does not guarantee payment.
My biggest takeaway is that account security should be treated as an ongoing responsibility rather than a one-time setup.
Strong passwords, two-factor authentication, trusted devices and careful handling of suspicious links remain essential. A protection program can add another layer, but it cannot replace responsible security practices.
The 30-day qualification requirement also sends an important message: maintaining account security consistently matters more than simply activating another feature.
For active crypto users, having an additional protection mechanism is a meaningful development. The real value will depend on how effectively the program handles eligible incidents and how clearly users understand its conditions.
Security is not just about protecting assets today. It is about building habits that reduce the chances of losing them tomorrow.
