This quarter at $AMD looks a lot like that. By the company's own numbers, data center sales rose 97% to $8.5 billion. CNBC reports it is now 64% of total revenue, up from 47% a year ago. Gaming sales, on the other hand, fell 40%. After the results, the stock jumped about 8% in after-hours trading.
My read is that the strength and the risk now sit in the same place. The company's future leans almost entirely on one question: will demand for AI chips keep this pace? CNBC also noted that in the days before the report, the stock had been falling on fears of overspending on AI. One night of results did not settle that fear.
The risk is simple. If demand drops in the part that brings in nearly two-thirds of revenue, the other parts can't cover the gap.
I'll be watching whether data center sales in the next quarter reach the company's own forecast.
Which number falling would make you say that leaning on one leg is no longer safe?
