Three key things to watch in this earnings report
· Data center revenue: It grew 107% year over year in the second quarter, and the market will continue to watch whether AI chip sales can ramp up.
· Next-quarter guidance: Third-quarter revenue is guided at around $13 billion, plus or minus $300 million; gross margin is around 56%.
· 2027 growth outlook: Management previously said data center revenue would more than double. Quantified targets, capacity, and delivery timelines are what could catalyze a rally.
Positioning early or waiting for signals
Positioning early may suit investors with relatively small positions who can tolerate significant volatility. AMD’s forward P/E is around 138x, and its valuation already incorporates high growth expectations.
A more cautious approach is to wait until the earnings report and conference call are out, then watch data center revenue, next-quarter guidance, and the 2027 outlook. If management quantifies “more than doubling” further and confirms that capacity and deliveries are on track, the opportunity ahead will be clearer.
Risks to watch
Even if results exceed expectations, the stock could still spike and then retreat. The market has recently started reassessing returns on AI capital spending, and with AMD’s earnings approaching, investors may reduce positions first. If data center growth slows, next-quarter guidance is weak, or the 2027 outlook lacks detail, pressure on the stock could continue to build. AMD has recently seen a significant pullback, and volatility risk remains pronounced.
My inclination: stay on the sidelines ahead of earnings and focus on whether the conference call provides clear evidence of growth; consider participating only if there is incremental growth, as trading opportunities based solely on meeting earnings targets are limited. $AMD
