Why can multisig wallets also suffer from management failures?

Multisig wallets reduce the risks of a single private key being compromised by requiring multiple signers to jointly approve transactions.

But multisig does not mean absolute security.

The following five situations can still create risks:

01|Keys stored together: Multiple signers’ keys may all be affected if the same device or account is compromised.

02|Lack of independent review: If everyone relies on other members to check transactions, multisig can become a mere formality.

03|Unreasonable signing threshold: A threshold that is too low weakens protection, while one that is too high may hinder normal operations and emergency recovery.

04|Problematic transaction details: Multisig cannot automatically detect malicious contracts, incorrect addresses, or dangerous operations.

05|Missing management procedures: Signers leaving, lost keys, or outdated permissions can all create risks.

Effective multisig management requires setting a reasonable signing threshold, storing keys independently, reviewing transactions independently, and establishing clear emergency procedures.

Multisig is not simply about distributing trust among more people, but about establishing a reliable system of permissions and review.

Next: Why does a contract passing an audit still not guarantee absolute security?

The second one is so true. I've seen multisigs where everyone completely phoned it in, and in the end, no one carefully checked the transaction details

Does storing keys in the same password manager count as centralized storage? Seems like many people fall into this trap

Setting the threshold is a real art: 2/3 and 3/5 are completely different experiences, and in an emergency, the wait can be agonizing

Looking forward to the next piece. There have been too many cases of things going wrong even after audits; bridge hacks are still fresh in our memory

At the end of the day, multisig is just a tool; if it becomes mere formalism, single-sig + hardware wallet is better
