Why it will be hard for him to stop
· The brand is inextricably tied to it: Strategy’s core narrative is “the Bitcoin treasury company.” Stopping purchases would amount to admitting a lack of firepower or confidence.
· There is historical precedent: After BTC fell below its average cost of about $76,052 in early 2026, the company still added 855 BTC, spending $75.3 million.
· The position structure: The cost basis is more of a “reference line” than a forced-liquidation level. As long as financing windows remain open, he has an incentive to keep lowering his average cost. But the constraints are tighter this time: As of October 25, Strategy held 848,517 BTC at an average cost of about $75,446; its BTC Yield for the year was -3.7%. This means share issuance is outpacing the growth in its Bitcoin holdings, passively diluting the share of Bitcoin held by common shareholders. Meanwhile, third-quarter net income reached $19.533 billion, but traditional software revenue was only $125.4 million, down 3% year over year. Profits came mainly from the revaluation of digital assets, not improved operating cash flow.
So his moves will look more like this: keep buying at lower prices, reduce the amounts, and let the stock price and interest rates dictate the pace of financing. If the price really falls below cost, the market will see “small-step accumulation,” rather than the frenzied buying sprees of several hundred million dollars at a time seen before.
What BTC falling below cost means for Strategy
In the short term, it mainly creates balance-sheet pressure, not automatic liquidation. The real dangers are threefold:
· A falling share price makes equity financing more expensive;
· Convertible debt and preferred stock costs rise;
· Institutions discount MSTR’s “Bitcoin premium.” If Bitcoin prices remain below cost for a long time, MSTR could shift from a “Bitcoin concept stock” to a “highly leveraged Bitcoin proxy,” amplifying volatility.
Does continued institutional buying mean BTC has bottomed? Not necessarily. Institutional buying only proves that someone is willing to absorb supply; it cannot prove that the bottom is in.
A more reliable combination of signals would be sustained spot buying, long-term holders on-chain stopping loss-driven selling, increased net outflows from exchanges, and looser macro liquidity.
For now, it looks more like BTC has entered a phase shaped by policy uncertainty and liquidity pricing; Saylor’s bullish calls alone cannot confirm a reversal.
In short, Saylor will keep buying after BTC falls below his cost basis, but he will shift from “buying blindly” to “buying more carefully.” For BTC, this can provide a floor, but it is not enough on its own to create a bull market.$STRC
