If your wallet is a house, then the blockchain is a road that records the flow of funds in and out.
To catch thieves, the police certainly need reasonable investigative authority. But that doesn't mean anyone can open your front door at any time and check how many eggs are left in your fridge.
Discussions about information sharing and anti-money laundering under the CLARITY Act make one question more important: Under what circumstances should personal transaction data be shared?
I believe at least four principles should be upheld.
First, legality. Access to information must have a clear legal basis.
Second, necessity. Only share information related to specific investigations and risk controls.
Third, limitation. Restrict who can access the data, its purpose of use, and how long it is retained.
Fourth, accountability. Improper access, data misuse, and privacy breaches should all carry appropriate consequences.
These principles won't hinder efforts to combat fraud; on the contrary, they can increase public trust in regulatory mechanisms.
After all, ordinary users need protection, not the fear that every legitimate transaction they make will become someone else's research report.
Make regulation effective, give privacy clear boundaries, and ensure technology truly serves people.
