BTCPay Server tells operators to shut down after hot wallets are drained ⚠️

BTCPay Server is free, open-source software that merchants use to accept Bitcoin payments. Around 3:55am IST on Monday, it told everyone running it to take their servers offline after reports that attackers were emptying hot wallets on several of them. Founder Nicolas Dorier says the affected servers seem to be running versions older than 2.4.2, and the project's own servers, which run 2.4.7, weren't hit. He says the attackers got in with administrator access, but it's still unclear how. No loss figure, number of affected merchants or fix has been announced yet, and the investigation is ongoing. Only the BTCPay software is affected, not the Bitcoin network itself.

Nicolas Dorier's response time was decent; at least he promptly called a halt

Hope the losses aren’t too big; small merchants can’t withstand this kind of thing

The cost of free and open source is having to handle security yourself

It's not a Bitcoin network issue, which is a small silver lining amid the misfortune

Let's wait for the investigation report; guessing now is pointless
