The unauthorized transfer of 97 million CORE may appear to be a protocol security incident, but in reality, it has sounded an alarm for the entire DeFi industry.
Why are so many investors willing to entrust their assets to third-party protocols? The answer is simple: they hope to improve capital efficiency and earn higher returns.
But that is precisely where the problem lies.
When assets move through multiple layers of protocols, contracts, and permission structures, the opportunities for returns increase, but so may the risks.
In this b14g incident, the project team has paused the affected contracts and is working with the Core team and exchanges to track the funds. About 68 million CORE remain on the Core chain, and about 9 million related assets have been frozen by exchange partners.
But note that remaining on-chain does not mean the assets have been recovered, and being frozen does not mean users have gotten their assets back.
This is what investors should really be paying attention to.
We don't need to dismiss the entire DeFi industry because of one third-party protocol incident, and we must not treat technological innovation as a guarantee that risks have disappeared.
A mature market needs innovation, as well as transparency; it needs returns, as well as responsibility.
What investors should fear most is not market volatility, but not knowing where the risks lie.
I hope this incident becomes an opportunity for the industry to improve its security mechanisms, and a reminder to every investor: don't just study how to make money; study how to protect your money, too.$AMZN
