In the AI era, what do chip companies fear most? Not a lack of orders, but having orders they can't fulfill—and, worse, customers ultimately turning to competitors.
Intel's data center and AI revenue reached $7.3 billion in the third quarter, up about 78% year over year—a very strong performance. This shows Intel hasn't been completely left behind by the AI boom, and demand for server CPUs remains robust.
But that also raises a problem: demand is strong, but manufacturing bottlenecks are constraining capacity. On top of that, an incident at an Israeli factory is expected to affect revenue by about $600 million over two quarters, also disrupting the supply of AI server chips.
Meanwhile, the market is watching to see whether Intel can build a real competitive edge in AI accelerators, advanced process nodes, and foundry services.
My view is that Intel still has opportunities in AI, but now that they have arrived, it must keep pace with its ability to deliver. NVIDIA has already built a strong position in the AI market, and AMD continues to compete. Intel must bring more convincing products and execution.
Still, the AI industry continues to expand, and CPUs, GPUs, and advanced manufacturing each have room in the market. #IntelEarningsBeatExpectationsButStockPlunged
Don't declare a legacy giant finished after a single plunge, and don't blindly buy in just because something has "AI" in its name. In the end, the true winners are judged by their technology and orders!
