The AI Spending War Enters Its Second Half! Microsoft Has the Answer: Computing Power Alone Isn’t Enough

For the past two years, there’s been an unspoken assumption among AI investors: whoever buys the most chips has the brightest future. Now the market is asking: The chips have been bought—when will they start paying for themselves?
Microsoft’s Azure grew 48% this quarter, with revenue reaching $33.17 billion and capital expenditures at $45.2 billion, while free cash flow remained at $18.6 billion. These results show that AI investment doesn’t have to be just a cash burn; it can also generate commercial returns through cloud services, enterprise subscriptions, and AI applications.
Google Cloud’s business grew 103%, also an impressive performance, but its $51.4 billion in capital expenditures resulted in negative free cash flow of $9.1 billion, naturally prompting investors to start calculating the payback period.
I care more about the combination of business growth and cash flow than fixating on any single growth figure. After all, revenue growth is the engine, while profits and cash flow are the fuel in the tank.
The good news is that enterprise AI demand is still expanding, with vast opportunities in computing power, cloud services, and agent applications. The AI industry hasn’t run out of steam; investors are simply no longer willing to buy into every grand vision unconditionally.
A truly healthy AI market should combine technological breakthroughs, business growth, and profits that deliver. Spending money takes skill, but making money is what really matters!
