Seeing Google Cloud grow 103%, the first reaction should be: What an impressive result! But capital markets don't always play by the rules. Alphabet's stock fell sharply, leaving many investors baffled.
The market isn't foolish. Google's third-quarter revenue grew 25%, and Google Cloud reached $30.7 billion, but net income declined year over year, free cash flow turned negative at $9.1 billion, and capital expenditures reached $51.4 billion. Meanwhile, search advertising growth also fell short of market expectations.
The question is: While AI cloud businesses are growing rapidly, can they offset infrastructure investment? Can AI search create new advertising value? These are what investors are really worried about.
By contrast, Azure grew 48%. Although Microsoft's capital expenditures were also staggering, it generated $18.6 billion in free cash flow, demonstrating stronger cash conversion.
In my view, there's no need to dismiss the AI industry just because Google's stock has fallen, nor should we ignore profitability pressures just because its cloud business is growing.
The market is shifting from AI hype to the realization of AI's commercial potential. That's not a bad thing, but an inevitable stage of the industry's maturation.
Bubbles need to be deflated, and genuine innovation needs time. Stock prices may ride a roller coaster in the short term, but ultimately, long-term value depends on performance.
