The gap in this earnings report was mainly “beyond operating profit”
· Revenue: 195.25 trillion won, up about 127% year over year.
· Operating profit: 107.44 trillion won, up about 783% year over year and exceeding 100 trillion won for the first time.
· Net profit: 75.14 trillion won, below the market expectation of 86.13 trillion won.
· Share price reaction: It fell more than 6% at one point after the earnings report was released.
The gap was mainly due to about 9.5 trillion won in financial and other losses, along with tax expenses and foreign exchange pressure from the won's appreciation. In other words, the chip business itself was very strong, but a lot of the profit was eaten up along the way.
High dividends do provide support. Samsung plans to pay a cash dividend of about 30 trillion won for the third quarter, with full-year shareholder returns of 90 trillion to 110 trillion won, about ten times its usual annual dividends in previous years. The effect is direct: this shifts Samsung from a “cyclical stock” toward a “cash-flow-return company.” When memory prices fall, stable dividends can ease selling pressure; long-term investors are also more willing to award high-dividend assets a valuation premium.
But the market still has three concerns
· Highly volatile profits: Memory chip prices and demand for HBM and SSDs fluctuate with AI capital spending.
· High proportion of earnings paid out as dividends: The dividend announced this quarter was about 40% of quarterly net profit, and whether this can continue depends on cash flow.
· Growth expectations are already very high: Record operating profit had long been expected by the market, yet the stock still plunged on the day of the earnings report, showing that investors care more about “whether it can do even better.”
So high dividends are more like a safety net than a substitute for performance. They can attract investors seeking cash returns, but cannot mask the lower-than-expected net profit, won appreciation, and losses in some business segments.
My view: In the short term, they can stabilize some confidence; in the long term, any revaluation depends on the memory cycle.
If DRAM shipments continue to grow in the fourth quarter, HBM orders remain strong, and the full-year high shareholder returns are delivered as planned, Samsung could gradually restore investor sentiment. If memory prices begin to soften, high dividends can only slow the decline and are unlikely to fully offset concerns about a cyclical downturn.$Samsung Electronics
