In the past, when companies talked about AI, the market listened with rapt attention. Now, when companies talk about AI, investors may first ask: Great, but what about profits? It’s not that the market has changed its mind; people have simply moved from “listening to the future” to “looking at results.”
Growth certainly matters. Without revenue growth, even impressive profits may simply be the result of belt-tightening. But if revenue races ahead while costs also rocket upward, leaving profits flat, investors will naturally ask more questions.
This is especially true of AI and cloud businesses, which require huge upfront investments. In the short term, profits can be affected by depreciation, R&D, and infrastructure development. You can’t judge a company’s performance by looking only at one quarter’s profit figures, nor should you cheer based solely on growth rates.
A more reliable approach is to look at revenue growth, profit margins, free cash flow, and returns on investment together. Growth determines how far a company can go; its ability to make money determines how steadily it can get there.
So the market isn’t rejecting growth—it’s unwilling to pay endlessly for growth without a clear path to results. For companies, this is both pressure and an opportunity to level up: move beyond telling a good story and start delivering results. The real strength lies in growing and making money. #Google Cloud grows 103%, but stock falls nearly 10%
