Google Cloud Growth Hits 103%, Yet Stock Suddenly Plunges! Don’t Focus Only on the Drop—The Logic Behind AI Investment Is Quietly Changing!
Seeing Google Cloud’s business grow 103%, then seeing its stock fall nearly 10% at one point after hours, many people may ask: Does the market no longer believe in AI?
I think it’s not that simple.
If the market really had no confidence in AI at all, its high-growth cloud business wouldn’t be attracting so much attention. What’s making investors hesitate is the cost behind that growth: massive capital expenditures, profits below expectations, and pressure on free cash flow.
In the past, AI was like a lottery ticket full of promise, and people were willing to bet on the future. Now, as companies continue building data centers and buying computing power, investors are asking more specific questions: Can revenue keep growing? Can profit margins improve? When will cash flow get better?
That’s not a bad thing; it shows the market is becoming more rational.
It’s like a newly opened restaurant: when customers line up at first, people praise its potential; but after six months in business, the owner still has to prove that sales are not only impressive, but that the restaurant is actually profitable after rent, labor, and ingredient costs.
The AI industry is no different. Hype can draw attention, but lasting competitiveness comes from real commercial value.
Of course, short-term stock price fluctuations don’t prove that a company will definitely succeed or fail in the future. Investors still need to consider valuation, cash flow, the competitive landscape, and returns on capital expenditures.
My view is that the market isn’t abandoning AI; it’s repricing it. Moving from chasing grand narratives to focusing on actual returns is a sign of the industry’s growth. The companies worth watching in the future won’t just be those best at telling AI stories, but those that can make AI truly profitable. After all, dreams can be big, but the business has to deliver, too!$GOOGL
